Be your own editor

What can you do to challenge the news?

Long gone are the days when the news agenda was defined by a few editors sitting in TV and newspaper offices. On the internet you can define what news you're interested in and what you want to read more about.

On sites like Newsvine you say whether you found a news story interesting and relevant and, over time, the site learns your preferences. Reddit is similar, although with less community involvement.

Or, you can tag articles you like on del.icio.us, then look at similar articles or look at what other articles people have tagged.

If you want news rated by trust rather than by popularity then you can got to Newstrust - on which registered users rate news articles against nine different criteria, from accuracy to style.

Many of these are American sites and therefore the most prominent news is often US focused.
